Sally von Rosen — artist website, zoomable archive

Sally von Rosen makes arched, hybrid creatures that balance on narrow, claw-like points, bodies that never settle into one posture. The site holds her archive the same way. All 21 projects and 90 photographs float as a single body on a white ground, and its shape is drawn anew on every visit: the silhouette, the lumps, the fuller end, which photograph sits where. There is no grid, and no fixed form to remember. Zooming in is how the archive is read: past a threshold the body pulls itself apart into exhibitions, and zooming out folds them back into the mass. Before any of it, one of her silhouettes morphs between sculptures, so the work introduces itself.

The overview is computed live from a random seed. The silhouette is read row by row, the photographs are packed into rows of equal height to fill it, then nudged and relaxed apart until no two sit closer than a fifth of a tile. A small camera engine eases toward a moving target instead of jumping, pulls the zoom toward the nearest exhibition, and stops where the images reach their native pixels, so it never zooms into blur. A flight into a project runs on the same curve the images float on, and both arrive together. Desktop draws DOM tiles moved by CSS transforms; phones draw the same archive in WebGL as an upright masonry. Sally publishes it herself, through an editor that commits to GitHub and is live in under a minute.
