Strelitzia — bird of paradise in black lacquer and gold

The species was chosen for its geometry rather than its color, asymmetric and angular, a hard spathe and blade-like sepals fused into a structure that reads as apparatus rather than ornament, supplying sharp creases, long curvature and thin edges where light breaks. Each material is tuned against that geometry. The lacquer runs near-mirror on the ridges and falls off fast into the creases, so form is read through reflection rather than shading, while the gold sits warmer and softer to separate the inner structure from the shell.
